IELTS Listening Test

The IELTS Listening test consists of four sections, and it takes 30 minutes to complete. The listening recordings are played only once, and candidates are required to answer 40 questions based on the recordings. The sections become increasingly difficult as the test progresses.

The four sections of the IELTS Listening test in the General Training module are:

  • Section 1: A conversation between two speakers set in an everyday social context, such as a conversation between a customer and a shopkeeper.
  • Section 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context, such as a speech about a tourist attraction or a hotel reservation.
  • Section 3: A conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, such as a discussion between a student and a tutor.
  • Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject, such as a lecture on history or a scientific explanation.

During the IELTS Listening test, candidates are provided with a question booklet and an answer sheet. Candidates listen to the recordings through headphones and answer the questions as they listen. The answers are written on the answer sheet as the test progresses.

The questions in the IELTS Listening test can take different forms, such as multiple-choice questions, matching tasks, completion tasks, and short answer questions. Candidates are required to transfer their answers to the answer sheet within the time provided.

The IELTS Listening test is scored on a nine-band scale, and the score is based on the number of correct answers. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. The Listening test score is then combined with the scores from the other IELTS modules (Reading, Writing, and Speaking) to give an overall IELTS band score.
